A Message from Dr. Ava Maxam, Director of the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA), in Commemorating World Water Day 2026

Today, March 22, the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) joins the international community in the global celebration of World Water Day, which commemorates the importance of freshwater and advocates for its sustainable management. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, World Water Day raises awareness for the 2.1 billion people lacking access to safe water.
In a world shaped by climate change, growing inequalities, and increasing pressure on natural resources, water is essential for life, underpinning food production, public health and sanitation, livelihoods, urban development and energy transitions. Yet for billions of people, access to safe potable water remains out of reach.
At the IMA, we remain at the forefront of scientific advocacy, conducting rigorous research to conserve water, enhance water quality studies in support of healthy marine ecosystems and to mitigate the impacts of climate change, agricultural runoff, and emerging contaminants such as micro-plastics from this precious commodity. Our work in monitoring coastal ecosystems is vital to achieving the 30×30 targets, ensuring that at least 30% of our marine and terrestrial resources are protected to sustain biodiversity and, by extension, our very livelihoods.
Through our ongoing Public Education and Awareness Project, the IMA is demonstrating how smart technologies – from satellite data forecasting to water conservation – propel the Blue Economy. By integrating high-level data, we are not only protecting our marine environment but also creating a framework where technology and nature work in tandem to drive sustainable development.
In support of the World Water Day 2026 theme, the IMA continues to highlight research in protecting water resources thereby driving action toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation).
As Trinidad and Tobago celebrates World Water Day, here are some key messages to keep in mind:
- Water is life: Every drop counts. Protecting our water resources means safeguarding health, food, and ecosystems.
- Access for all: Clean and safe water is a human right, not a privilege.
- Climate connection: Water is at the heart of climate adaptation—droughts, floods, and rising seas all demand smarter water management.
- Act now: From reducing waste to supporting conservation projects, individual and collective action makes a difference.
