Advancing Deep-Sea Discovery & National Stewardship
The Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) recently participated in the Pre-Expedition Scientific Seminar at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine. Held on 26 June 2026 at the Learning Resource Centre at The University of the West Indies St Augustine, the Seminar was held ahead of the landmark deep-sea research expedition titled, “Deep Wonders of Trinidad and Tobago and Adjacent High Seas.”
Led by renowned deep-sea scientist Dr. Diva Amon, the deep-sea expedition aims to unite local and international scientists to explore, study, and document unexplored deep-water ecosystems within Trinidad and Tobago’s national jurisdiction.
During the Seminar, Dr. Ava Maxam, Director of the IMA highlighted the strategic national importance of this mission: “Beyond advancing science, this information will inform national development strategies, guide conservation policies, and strengthen our role in high seas governance. In a time when climate change and human activity threaten ocean health, this expedition is a beacon of hope and a tool for resilience.”
This initiative marks a major milestone in Trinidad and Tobago’s scientific legacy, advancing critical discussions on Ocean Governance (strengthening policies for protected and international waters), Climate Resilience (understanding deep-sea ecosystems to combat environmental shifts and Sustainable Stewardship (managing marine resources for long-term national benefit).
Beyond scientific discovery, the expedition opens vital pathways for youth mentorship, professional development, and capacity building. It serves as a powerful reminder that marine science is alive with possibility, offering future careers in marine biology, ocean engineering, robotics, and climate science.
