Advancing Ocean Governance: Congratulations Dr. Hassanali

We are proud to celebrate Dr. Kahlil Hassanali of the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) as the lead author of a newly published peer-reviewed article in Frontiers in Marine Science – April 13, 2026.
Titled, “Big schools of small fish in a big pond – the influence of small-island developing states in the BBNJ process”, the article highlights the contributions of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to the negotiation and development of the legally binding BBNJ Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Through the efforts of Dr. Hassanali, the IMA has been contributing to the ongoing negotiations, which underscores how SIDS, despite their size, have made significant contributions to global ocean governance and the sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction.
