Emerging Skillsets and Career Paths in Marine Science in Support of the Blue Economy

The blue economy, which refers to the traditional sectors of fisheries, coastal tourism and shipping, is rapidly expanding to include emerging industries such as marine aquaculture, sustainable renewable ocean energy and marine biotechnology (medicine, cosmetics and marine agro-products).  According to a recent OECD Ocean Economic outlook, the blue economy is forecast to generate as much as US 3trillion dollars by 2030.

What does this mean for our current workforce in Trinidad and Tobago…

The shift to marine aquaculture, renewable ocean energy and marine biotechnology calls for a skillset and education who can operate and manage at the intersection of oceanography, data science and roboticsSome key roles can include:

Sustainable Marine Industries

  • Aquaculture Managers and Technicians focused on sustainable seafood production and marine farming.
  • Marine Biotechnologists focused on developing pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and biofuels from marine organisms.
  • Ocean Farmers focused on cultivating seaweed and shellfish for food, bio-packaging, and carbon sequestration.

Renewable Ocean Energy

  • Offshore Wind Engineers: Design and maintain wind farms at sea.
  • Marine Energy Technicians: Work with wave, tidal, and thermal energy systems.
  • Environmental Impact Analysts: Ensure energy projects meet ecological standards.

Science, Data and Conservation

  • Marine Spatial Planners: Use data to balance ocean uses like fishing, tourism, and conservation.
  • Oceanographers and Marine Ecologists: Study ocean systems and climate impacts.
  • Marine Robotics Engineers: manage the design, deployment, and maintenance of underwater vehicles
  • Environmental Data Scientists: process complex data streams from multiple sensors and create models to inform climate policy and conservation.
  • Field Technicians: both aerial and underwater drones, perform real-time missions, troubleshoot hardware and manage data capture in situ.
  • Blue Carbon Specialists: Focus on carbon capture in coastal ecosystems like mangroves and seagrasses.

Coastal and Maritime Services

  • Eco-Tourism Operators: Lead sustainable travel experiences like reef diving and whale watching.
  • Maritime Robotics Technicians: Build and operate underwater drones for exploration and research.
  • Port Sustainability Coordinators: Help ports reduce emissions and improve waste management.

Education and Policy

Blue Economy Policy Advisors: Shape regulations that support ocean health and economic growth.

Marine Educators and Communicators: Raise awareness through outreach, media, and curriculum development.
