A New Wave of Hope: Coral Spawning Sparks Restoration at Booby Island Reef, Tobago
In mid-July 2025, something extraordinary unfolded beneath the waves off Booby Island Reef, northeast Tobago. The MARIN Tobago Team, together with coral restoration specialist Hannah Ditzler from SECORE International and graduate trainee Zeke John from UWI Mona Campus, witnessed a spectacular natural event: a mass spawning of boulder and symmetrical brain corals.
Coral spawning is one of nature’s most critical events. During this process, corals release eggs and sperm into the water, allowing new coral larvae to develop and eventually settle on reefs. This natural reproduction is essential for maintaining healthy coral populations and ensuring the long-term regeneration and resilience of reef ecosystems.

What made this occasion even more remarkable was the team’s success in collecting sperm and eggs from symmetrical brain corals for the very first time. These tiny coral babies, carefully nurtured through assisted fertilisation, will soon be raised in a specially designed nursery. Here, they’ll grow stronger and healthier before being transplanted back to the reef, increasing their chances of survival in the wild. This improved method builds on last year’s pioneering work and promises to boost the resilience of Tobago’s coral reefs.
Coral reefs around the world face numerous threats, including climate change, coral bleaching, pollution, and coastal development. These stressors weaken coral communities, making restoration efforts like this all the more vital. By assisting the natural reproductive process, the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) and its partners are helping to safeguard these delicate ecosystems for the future.
The IMA continues to lead these cutting-edge larval-based restoration efforts, fostering hope that Tobago’s reefs will flourish once again vital ecosystems that support marine life and coastal communities alike.
