Dr. Rahanna Juman elected Vice Chair to the IOCARIBE Board
Dr. Rahanna Juman, Deputy Director of Research of the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) and well-known Wetlands Ecologist, has been elected Vice Chair of the International Oceanographic Commission (IOC) IOCARRIBE Board.
Dr. Juman was elected to this position on April 25th, 2025, during the Eighteenth Intergovernmental Session of the IOC Sub-Commission for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions (SC-IOCARIBE-XVIII), held in Brazil from 23rd to the 25th of April, 2025.
The IOCARIBE Board, which was established in November 1982, is the Sub-Commission for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions under the International Oceanographic Commission (IOC). Operating within the framework of the General Policy of the IOC, the IOCARIBE Board is responsible for the promotion, development and coordination of the IOC’s marine scientific research and development programmes, ocean services and related activities including Capacity Development in the Tropical Americas and the Caribbean region, through the concerted efforts and action of IOCARIBE Member States.
Mandated to carry out the global programmes on a regional basis for the Greater Caribbean, the IOCARIBE Board enables its thirty (30) Member States and fifteen (15) Territories to manage, protect and sustainably develop the Ocean and its resources with the provision of the best available science. This will assist and enable the Territories and Member States to formulate their own marine policy instruments in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Goals of the IOC Ocean Decade 2021-2030.
Dr. Juman brings significant national experience in marine and coastal environmental scientific research and regional experience in technical cooperation.
