IMA Donated “Coral Reefs of Trinidad and Tobago” Books to NALIS
For Immediate Release – The Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) donated one hundred and sixty (160) copies of its most recent publication titled, “Coral Reefs of Trinidad and Tobago” to Ms. Paula Greene, Executive Director of NALIS on July 8, 2025.
Unveiled at an official book launch on June 10, 2025 in Tobago to commemorate World Oceans Day 2025 of which the 2025 theme – “Wonder; Sustaining what Sustains us” – effectively captured the essence of the book, “Coral Reefs of Trinidad and Tobago” was authored by Dr. Anjani Ganase, Senior Research Officer and Coral Reef Ecologist of the IMA. Providing an in-depth exploration of coral reefs of Tobago and Trinidad with primary information on the ecology and biology of local coral reefs, the 200-page full colour publication highlights our connection to coral reefs, spanning ecological, socioeconomic and cultural ties.
At the book presentation, Ms. Greene congratulated Dr. Anjani Ganase on the authorship of the book and conveyed her deepest gratitude to the IMA for the generous donation intended for school and public libraries across Trinidad and Tobago. The Executive Director said it is commendable that the IMA continues its conduct of research as well as documenting information on the ecology and biology of our local coral reefs and on other aspects of the marine environment. Coral Reefs of Trinidad and Tobago will be processed and made available to schools and the public via NALIS’ libraries.
Apart from being a resource that is rich in knowledge and learning, the book is well-designed and adorned with colourful photographs showcasing the breath-taking beauty of coral reefs and scenic seascapes. According to Ms. Greene, the first thing one notices before reading the book are the stunning underwater photographs of coral reefs teeming with marine life, which she further added, appeals to school children while captivating adults.
Asked what inspired her to write the publication on coral reefs of our twin-island state, Dr. Ganase replied that the local reef and divers community in Tobago and the community of marine scientists with whom she works provided an abundance of support, unreservedly sharing their skills with her which have developed into meaningful friendships. Furthermore, by showcasing the beauty and fragility of our coral reefs through the book, Dr. Ganase aims to inspire budding environmental conservationists so that safeguarding our coral reefs will be maintained for generations to come. Dr. Ganase reminded that the Caribbean has 10 per cent of the world’s coral reefs and so the objective is to raise awareness with the book in the hope of safeguarding and creating more resilient marine ecosystems.
Dr. Rahanna Juman, Deputy Director of Research at the IMA, added that the book is for everyone who wants to learn about the marvels, beauty and importance of coral reefs. Dr. Juman further stated that the book serves as a tribute to their inherent beauty, ecological importance and a call to action in the face of global threats such as climate change, elevated sea temperatures and the Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease. She said that despite these challenges, there is reason for hope as this publication not only raises awareness but helps to chart a course towards the preservation and restoration of coral reefs.
Also present at the handing over of the books were the Institute’s Information Centre Staff – Christine Thomas-Dookie, Krystal Ganaselal and Lorraine Barrow.
