Digging Deeper:  Why Beach Sediments Matter to Leatherbacks

The Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) extends warm congratulations to Christopher Alexis, PhD candidate and Research Officer at the IMA, for his outstanding work in leatherback turtle conservation and coastal geomorphology at Grande Rivière, Trinidad and Tobago. 

Under the guidance of Dr. Junior Darsan of the Department of Geography at The University of the West Indies (UWI), St Augustine Campus, Christopher’s research focuses on examining the intricate relationship between beach sediments and the nesting success of leatherback turtles. His work represents the first empirical study of its kind in Trinidad and Tobago, providing valuable data to support evidence-based conservation of these endangered marine giants.

But why do sediments matter so much to turtles? Beach sediment characteristics such as grain size, moisture levels, and compaction—play a critical role in the nesting success of leatherback turtles. These factors influence nest temperature, which determines hatchling sex, as well as oxygen flow and the ease with which hatchlings can emerge. Understanding these dynamics is essential for developing informed conservation strategies, particularly in areas like Grande Rivière, one of the most important nesting sites for leatherbacks in the Western Hemisphere. 

This research is not only enhancing our understanding of the physical environment in which leatherbacks nest, but also helping to shape better coastal management practices that ensure the long-term survival of this vulnerable species. 

Thanks to the dedication of researchers like Christopher, we are one step closer to safeguarding these majestic creatures and preserving the delicate balance of our marine ecosystems for generations to come.
