The Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) is the custodian of the only Marine Reference Collection in Trinidad and Tobago. This collection is of national, regional and global significance in terms of its unique contents and relationship to world-wide taxonomic holdings. It is the largest collection of marine specimens for Trinidad and Tobago, and includes a number of fish species, molluscs, crustaceans, and corals. The IMA is now in the process of upgrading this collection, and integrating it into the global network of taxonomic holdings using up to date collection management standards.
