The Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) is proud to be collaborating with the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard (TTCG) for tracking and identification of oil spills across Trinidad and Tobago.Under the National Oil Spill Contingency Protocol (NOSCP), led by the Ministry of Energy & Energy Industries (MEEI), IMA with TTCG and several other agencies actively respond various aspects of oil spill tracking and remediation.As part of the NOSCP, the IMA carries out sampling and conducts fingerprinting analysis using the state-of-the-art Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometer (GCMS).The IMA is also developing an oil fingerprinting database, which will serve to cross-reference oil samples with originating refineries across...
Joint Efforts Propel Successful Oil Spill Cleanup in Tobago
In a significant achievement, over 51,000 barrels of oil and more than 16,056 cubic meters of waste have been cleared from Tobago’s coastal areas following the vessel grounding near Cove Reef on February 7th. As part of the recovery efforts, 480 freshwater and coastal wildlife species have been cleaned and released back into their natural habitats. IMA Assesses Tobago’s Spill-Affected Areas
Scarborough The Institute of Marine Affairs on 10th February, 2024, dispatched a team to conduct initial ecological assessments of mangroves, beaches and other areas affected by the oil spill of 7th February, caused when the crew-less vessel, Gulf Stream, capsized nearshore Cove Bay on the Atlantic side of Tobago. The team analysed data from satellite imagery product providers such as The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to track movement of the oil-like substance over distance and time, as well as mined years of rich historical data amassed by IMA for monitoring Tobago's marine and coastal environments.
